Inlays and onlays are custom-made fillings that our team can apply to decayed or damaged teeth.

Inlays fit inside the cusps (or bumps) of your tooth, like a bonded filling. Onlays are similar to inlays, but they cover more of the tooth’s surface area and wrap over at least one edge of the tooth.

What are inlays and onlays made from?

Inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, composite resin, or gold. Each material has different advantages and disadvantages. Our caring team will be pleased to explain the benefits of each material and assist you in selecting the material that is best for you.

How will I know if an inlay or onlay is right for me?

Before making a recommendation, our professionals will assess the tooth that requires treatment. After a thorough examination, we will be able to make a recommendation.

An inlay is typically only an option when the decay or damage to the structure of the tooth is minimal. If the tooth has sustained more than a minimal amount of damage, an onlay will likely be appropriate since it can help to support the structure of the tooth.

How will the inlay or onlay be placed on my tooth?

Placing both inlays and onlays is a two-step process and will be completed over the course of two appointments.

At your first appointment, our team will remove any decay if any from your tooth and take impressions to send to the lab where the inlay or onlay will be prepared. Before this first appointment is completed, our team will place a temporary filling into your tooth.

During your second appointment, we will remove your temporary filling and your custom-made inlay or onlay will be fitted and bonded to your tooth. The result will be a strong, sturdy and attractive restoration of your original tooth.
