Single dental implants are used to fill gaps that are created by missing teeth. Unlike dentures, implants are fixed, and do not need to be removed for maintenance and cleaning.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, made from titanium. These artificial tooth roots are inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. The implants are then capped with a crown or bridge, resulting in a natural aesthetically pleasing smile.

If only one tooth is missing, are implants a good option?

Yes! Many patients choose a single implant to fill a gap caused by a single missing tooth to improve their dental health, and to restore their smile.

What are the advantages of a single implant?

Single implants can fill in the gap created by a single missing tooth. Implants are a fixed solution, and unlike dentures, do not need to be removed for maintenance and cleaning.

Unlike a bridge, which affects the teeth that surround it when an implant is placed none of the adjacent teeth are affected.

When you choose a single implant, the crown which attaches to the implant will be custom-made by our in-office lab to be ideal for your smile. The result is a beautifully corrected smile with no unsightly gaps!

How will I care for my implant?

You will not need to take any special steps to care for your implant. You simply clean your implant along with your natural teeth with your usual brushing and flossing routine.

Regular professional cleanings and dental examinations are crucial in maintaining the health of your gums supporting the implant, which in turn increases the life-span of the implant.

How will my single implant be inserted?

When we insert a single implant we follow a two-step process over the course of three appointments.

During the first appointment, our team will apply local anaesthetic to the area where the insertion is planned. Once the anaesthetic has fully taken effect, we will insert the titanium ‘root’ into your jawbone.

Once insertion is complete, our team will close the gum tissue over the implant. The soft tissue around the implant must have time to fully heal at this point before we can proceed with the second step.

While healing time varies from patient to patient, some patients will take several months to completely repair the area.

When the soft tissue has fully healed, an abutment (a small metal post) will be inserted into the ‘root’. The abutment will hold a crown in place. Once the abutment is in place, an impression will be taken of the area.

This impression will be used to construct a custom-made crown. Before this second appointment is over, you will be fitted with a temporary crown, which will remain in place while your permanent custom-made crown is being constructed.

Another short appointment will be required to attach your custom-made crown to the abutment, and ensure the fit is correct. After this appointment, your implant is complete.
